Formation: Four couples in a square.
The Grand Square
For purposes of this description "partner" is always the original partner, the one with whom the dance begins; "opposite" is always that particular person standing directly opposite when the dance begins.
COUNTS
| Intro: Heads face to the center; sides face partner. |
| 4 Heads walk fwd 4 steps, turn ¼ to face partner, while at the same time sides back away from partner 4 steps and turn to face opposite; |
| 4 Heads take near hand of opposite, back up 4 steps and turn to face that same person, as sides walk fwd 4 steps to meet opposite and turn to face center (partner is across the set); |
| 4 Heads back away from opposite 4 steps, turn 1/4 to face partner, while sides walk into the center 4 steps and turn to face opposite; |
| 4 Heads walk 4 steps to partner, DO NOT TURN, as sides join hands with partner and back up to place, remaining facing center; |
| Reverse (follow the exact floor pattern in reverse). |
